College described as “the best years of your life”. Years full of hard work, late nights, studying, new friends, and whole new experiences. A place where you get a clean slate, no one knows you and get to be person you want. A place I have to put off for 2 years while I fulfill my GE requirements at a community college. Don’t get me wrong, a community college is also great but it will never live up to a 4 year university. I was willing to put behind my fears of leaving my mother alone and growing up. Many people who knew me well these knew these two tasks were huge for me. By the middle of Senior year I had applied to 16 schools varying from CSU, UC’S and privates. I got denied from 2 and accepted into the rest. I was one of the top graduating students whom was involved in Student Council and other activities. From the 14 schools I narrowed down my options to University of California Santa Cruz and San Francisco State University, two very different options. Ultimately I chose University of California Santa Cruz was the place I would call home for the next fours. I accepted their admission and signed up for orientation. Orientation was everything I imagined and more. This happy period would soon end when I would receive from an email from them ( UCSC Admissions). It was a short email that explained my admission at UCSC was canceled for failure to send my test scores. My first reaction was indifferent since I knew for a fact I had sent my test scores 2 times before the due date! A few months of fighting began, I worked with my college advisor to write letters of appeal, emails and make phone calls. All of which didnt work. Admissions kept telling me “NO” and to look into other options because I would not be attending UCSC in the fall of 2011. The reason why my admission was canceled was because UCSC could not match up my name with the scores. My full name has 3 names due to my parents being seperated at birth. My name with the test agency only had 2. For the simple reason of not being able to match up these two names I had my admission canceled. It was not even my fault of being irresponsible but of UCSC admissions of putting the full effort to look for test scores if they really wanted me there. Should I mention I’m also a Latina.
